The Chrysler RAM (pictured) hardly has the look of a fuel efficient vehicle – but it’s clear that with its 2013 design, the focus has been very much on fuel saving.
The vehicle boasts an array of new features including: a more fuel efficient 3.6litre V6 engine; eight-speed automatic transmission; stop-start system; pulse-width modulation that reduces parasitic electrical load; active aerodynamics; and a thermal management system. Let’s take a look at each one:
- New engine: The 3.6litre V6 engine offers best of class fuel economy for V6 trucks – a 20 per cent improvement compared to the previous model. It also produces 42 per cent more horsepower and 13 per cent more torque at 305hp and 365Nm respectively.
- Eight-speed transmission: The automatic transmission is operated by a dash-mounted rotary e-shift dial and doubles the number of gears compared to the previous automatic, improving fuel economy.
- Thermal management: Has been designed to raise engine and transmission fuel temperatures that can reduce parasitic losses from high viscosity engine oil and transmission fluid, potentially boosting fuel efficiency by 1.7 per cent.
- Stop-start: A new system that shuts off the engine when the Chrysler RAM comes to a complete stop and improves fuel economy by 3.3 per cent.
- Aerodynamics: Co-operative application of active aerodynamics has led to a six per cent aerodynamic improvement.
- Electric power steering: It features electric power steering to improve fuel efficiency by 1.8 per cent.
- Weight reduction: Measures have included a redesigned frame that reduces weight by 30lbs.
- Pulse-width modulation: A new fuel saving technology that reduces parasitic electrical load.
- Low rolling resistance tyres: Tread patterns and the use of advanced materials help to boost efficiency.
